In 1901, he acquired Swiss citizenship, which he kept for the rest of his life. In 1897, at the age of seventeen, he enrolled in the mathematics and physics teaching diploma program at the Swiss Federal polytechnic school in Zürich, graduating in 1900. As a result, he became increasingly isolated from the mainstream of modern physics.īorn in the German Empire, Einstein moved to Switzerland in 1895, forsaking his German citizenship (as a subject of the Kingdom of Württemberg) the following year. Secondly, he attempted to devise a unified field theory by generalizing his geometric theory of gravitation to include electromagnetism too. Firstly, he fought a long rearguard action against quantum theory's introduction of fundamental randomness into science's picture of the world, objecting that "God does not play dice". Especially notable was his work on the quantum physics of radiation, in which light consists of particles, subsequently called photons.įor much of the last phase of his academic life, Einstein worked on two endeavors that proved ultimately unsuccessful. The middle part of his career also saw him making important contributions to statistical mechanics and quantum theory. A cosmological paper that he published the following year laid out the implications of general relativity for the modeling of the structure and evolution of the universe as a whole. In 1915, he proposed a general theory of relativity that extended his system of mechanics to incorporate gravitation. These outlined a theory of the photoelectric effect, explained Brownian motion, introduced his special theory of relativity-a theory which addressed the inability of classical mechanics to account satisfactorily for the behavior of the electromagnetic field-and demonstrated that if the special theory is correct, mass and energy are equivalent to each other. In 1905, a year sometimes described as his annus mirabilis (miracle year), Einstein published four groundbreaking papers. His intellectual achievements and originality have made the word Einstein broadly synonymous with genius. In a 1999 poll of 130 leading physicists worldwide by the British journal Physics World, Einstein was ranked the greatest physicist of all time. His work is also known for its influence on the philosophy of science. He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his services to theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect", a pivotal step in the development of quantum theory. His mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc 2, which arises from relativity theory, has been called "the world's most famous equation". Best known for developing the theory of relativity, Einstein also made important contributions to quantum mechanics, and was thus a central figure in the revolutionary reshaping of the scientific understanding of nature that modern physics accomplished in the first decades of the twentieth century.

It established new rules that favored big carriers that flew larger airplanes. To aid in this purpose, Brown drafted legislation that Congress adopted as the Air Mail Act of 1930. Brown was convinced that he could use air mail contracts to stimulate the growth of a stable and efficient airline industry. The emergence of a true airline industry from this jumble was largely the work of one man, Walter Folger Brown, appointed postmaster general when the Hoover Administration came to office in 1929. There were about 45 of these airline companies, most of them small and undercapitalized, flying short routes and disinclined or unable to grow or invest in new equipment. Another carrier shipped a cast iron stove as air mail. One carrier flooded the system with Christmas cards, which cost him nine cents each, including postage, but returned 18 cents each to the airline in revenue. Subsidies exceeded the postage on the letters. “To take in as much for carrying a 150-pound passenger as for hauling an equivalent weight in air mail, a line would have had to charge a prohibitive $450 per ticket.” “In 1926, airlines were paid three dollars per pound for flying the mail a thousand miles,” said historian Oliver E. They seldom bothered to install seats on their airplanes.Īir mail and freight paid better. They had little interest in carrying passengers and made little provision for it. Some of these commercial carriers called themselves airlines, but for most of them, that was stretching it. By 1927, they had taken over completely from the Post Office pilots. In 1925, however, Congress decided to turn air mail operations over to private contractors to encourage commercial aviation. Regular transcontinental service was established in 1924. Night flying became routine, made possible not only by instruments in the airplanes but also by ground beacons and lighted emergency landing fields along the way. In 1922, Post Office pilots went an entire year without a fatal accident. It was loaded again onto airplanes the following morning.Īn O-19 flies over the Columbia River on a mail flight.īoth safety and operational capability improved with time. The airplanes landed at dark and transferred the mail to trains for the next leg of the route. For several years, the air mail operated only in daytime. The decision was also partly due to the fact that the domain was already in use, and it was six months after the launch of twttr that the crew purchased the domain and changed the name of the service to Twitter. The original project code name for the service was twttr, an idea that Williams later ascribed to Noah Glass, inspired by Flickr and the five-character length of American SMS short codes. Jack Dorsey, then an undergraduate student, introduced the idea of an individual using an SMS service to communicate with a small group. In 2020, it was estimated that approximately 48 million accounts (15% of all accounts) were not genuine people. In practice, the vast majority of tweets are produced by a minority of users. By the start of 2019, Twitter had more than 330 million monthly active users. In 2013, it was one of the world's ten most-visited websites. By 2012, more than 100 million users produced 340 million tweets a day, and the service handled an average of 1.6 billion search queries per day. Its parent company, Twitter, Inc., was based in San Francisco, California and had more than 25 offices around the world. The mobile and PSVR markets are the largest in VR, and Unity is already well positioned to port games to many platforms such as PS4 and PC, or many different mobile markets. Unity is also a good choice for VR development, although VR is a very small market at the moment. Despite this Unity is an adequate platform for developing 2D games even when compared to other dedicated 2D engines, particularly if you plan to release the game across multiple mobile devices. Unit圓D’s 2D pipeline is a more recent addition to the engine, and is less mature than the 3D pipeline. Unity is particularly popular for mobile game development and much of their focus is on mobile platforms. Unity is an all purpose game engine that supports 2D and 3D graphics, drag and drop functionality and scripting through C#. First announced only for OS X, at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in 2005, it has since been extended to target 27 platforms. i was excited for unity but now i'm looking forward to sticking to apple frameworks and hope they make them more robust.Unity is a cross-platform game engine developed by Unity Technologies, which is primarily used to develop video games and simulations for computers, consoles and mobile devices. the apple guy told me realitykit might support mac in the future, again he iterated that it is very early in development and they didn't want to break things in support for multiple platforms. i wanted to build a mac game and xr experience in tandem. i was looking into porting my game from scenekit to realitykit but hit a roadblock with the new realitykit composer only supporting xrOS. the apple rep told me they are looking for developer input on tools they use and workflows, so speak up. godot has a tiny swift community but without apple's direct support it isn't going anywhere. i really wish apple would push swift onto engines. but then the guy form unity told me this would not be the case, the whole emulation and input would be handled in unity and you would have no control of it in xcode. an apple employee that works on xr was there and i asked him if the package created with unity would have some exposure of the entities in it to xcode, he said it may be possible, it is still new. With Unity I just cannot do C#, I think I am going to stick with Apple's RealityKit! i went to a unity presentation for polywahteverit'scalled last night and got to ask questions. See Unity's spatial webpage for more information. Unity has not yet offered a time frame for the public release of PolySpatial, but developers who signed up for the beta are being given early access in waves starting today. We can't wait to see what incredible experiences are created. This enables Unity developers to take full advantage of the powerful and unique capabilities of Apple Vision Pro. Unity-based apps and games run natively on Apple Vision Pro, so they have access to groundbreaking visionOS features, including low latency pass-through and high-resolution rendering. We know there is a huge community of developers who have been building incredible 3D experiences using Unity’s robust authoring tools, and we're so excited for them to build apps for Apple Vision Pro. Apple vice president of the Vision Products Group Mike Rockwell commented: For example, the crowdfunded Apple Arcade game "What the Golf?" is already being ported to visionOS using PolySpatial. Most importantly, PolySpatial can be used to port existing games to visionOS. It's not just "you can put Unity up in the slate" (which is supported on day one), but you can actually put it inside of real space and with other experiences at the same time - whether they're Unity, Reality Kit or other Apple experiences. Primarily that's things like Unity application existing in a shared space with other applications, being able to integrate with Reality Kit and the visionOS. We had to work, ground up, to make sure we could make it easy for our creators to unlock capabilities. Unity Create general manager Marc Whitten told TechCrunch: PolySpatial provides access to technologies like pass-through and Dynamic Foveated Rendering, as well as popular Unity features like AR Foundation and XR Interaction Toolkit. Unity's authoring and simulation capabilities are combined with RealityKit's managed app rendering to ensure that content feels familiar. PolySpatial has been developed in collaboration with Apple and was announced at WWDC earlier this year, offering familiar workflows to those who have already used the Unity Engine to reduce friction in the development process. Unity's "PolySpatial" development platform for visionOS is available in beta as of today, providing a way for developers to create and port over 3D experiences like games to Apple's Vision Pro headset. |
